This month's Rust update focuses on addressing long-standing bugs and improvements, enhancing the overall gameplay experience. The developers have been actively working through community feedback to resolve persistent issues, making everyday gameplay smoother and more enjoyable.

Looking ahead, November promises significant meta and balance changes, including the much-anticipated Naval update. Players can look forward to modular boats with cannons, customizable vessels, new ocean-based monuments, and the exploration of smaller islands.

In December, Rust will celebrate its 12th anniversary, along with the announcement of the Warhammer X Rust crossover DLC.

Long Distance Gunshots

Rust's networking range is made up of grids, which server owners can adjust. These grids affect elements like gun audio, making the world feel more connected. The update allows gunshots to be heard at different distances, depending on the weapon type:

  • Pistols / SAR / SKS / SMGs / Shotguns - 400 meters
  • AK / LR - 500 meters
  • LMGs / Minigun / Long Distance Rifles (Bolt Action Rifle / L9) - 600 meters

This change enhances the game's realism, offering strategic advantages and disadvantages based on weapon choice.

Team Bag Labels

Identifying team members' bags has been simplified. Players with Building Privilege and a Hammer can now see which bags belong to which team members.

Minicopter Damage Indicators

New visual and audio damage indicators for minicopters provide clearer feedback on their health status, with visual cues at 45% and 20% health remaining.

Foliage Displacement Improvements

Foliage displacement has been enhanced for smoother transitions, making the environment more realistic when objects are removed or players move through it.

Volumetric Clouds Enabled by Default

Volumetric clouds are now enabled by default, replacing the 2D clouds. This change aims to enhance the visual quality of the game, with settings tied to graphics presets.

Notable Changes

  • Automated Workshop Screenshots: Workshop submissions now automatically include screenshots.
  • Players Eyes: Fixed the bug causing players' eyes to appear closed.
  • Invisible Respawn: Fixed players being invisible when respawning.
  • RF C4: Fixed C4 not being stackable after enabling RF.
  • Tugboat Rug: Fixed rugs deleting deployables when picked up on a tugboat.
  • Barricade Placement: Fixed barricade deployment on sand dunes around the giant excavator.

Exhibit Decor Pack DLC

The Exhibit Decor Pack DLC introduces a collection of deployable items to enhance your base's aesthetics. Available for purchase in-game or from the Rust Steam item store, it includes:

  • Bulb String Lights
  • Clothing Mannequin
  • Wall Cabinet
  • Moveable Spotlights

Parallel Player Processing - Part 2

Threading Player Updates

Building on previous updates, more player update code has been converted to batch/pipeline form, allowing for parallel processing on worker threads. This change aims to improve server performance and scalability.

Server Occlusion Optimizations

Server occlusion has been optimized to reduce excessive checks per frame, improving performance. The changes include deduplicating occlusion queries, running them in parallel, and caching results.

Encryption Changes Continued

The minimum encryption level for servers to be considered 'secure' is now set to 2. Server owners should update their server settings to comply with this change.
